'The Marvels'' director Nia DaCosta blames Captain America for Thanos’ snap

'The Marvels'' director Nia DaCosta blames Captain America for Thanos’ snap

Marvel Studios

Director Nia DaCosta, who is set to helm The Marvels, the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  That said, she has her own thoughts on who's to blame for Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War that wiped out half the universe.

Ever since Infinity War's release in 2018, fans have blamed Star-Lord's inability to control his feelings, Thor's overconfidence, and the decisions made by characters like Dr. Strange and Wanda Maximoff as the reasons Thanos succeeded. However, speaking to Inverse, DaCosta argues that Captain America's decision to not sacrifice Vision places him squarely at fault for Thanos' victory.

“Something I like to say a bit flippantly about Captain America is that the Snap is all his fault because he was trying to do his best, trying to do the right thing. There is a world in which he’s a villain because, at the end of the day, he should have just sacrificed Vision,” she says.

“[Captain America] chose one robot’s life, albeit a sentient one, over literally the entire universe,” she explains. “There’s a sort of anti-hero in that if you want to look at it through that lens. People would say I’m crazy for thinking that way, but there’s something connected to the journey of the anti-hero and the hero.”

Explaining the difference between the two, DaCosta says, “The hero’s pain is something that spurs them to martyr themselves,” she adds, “and an anti-hero’s pain is a thing that kind of starts their journey as opposed to ending it.”

The Marvels is slated to hit theaters on November 11, 2022.

A family in Warwickshire, England got an unexpected visit from Tom Cruise when his helicopter landed in their garden.

The 59-year-old actor, who is in the U.K. filming Mission Impossible 7, was forced to make the emergency landing while the nearby Coventry Airport was temporarily shut down, according to BBC News.

The owner of the property, Alison Webb, says her family had only been told an unnamed VIP needed somewhere to land as the nearby airport was shut.

"It turned out to be an incredible day," she adds. "It was surreal, I still now can't believe it happened."

Cruise posed for pictures and even gave a free helicopter ride to Webb's children and her partner's kids.

"He went straight over to the children for a chat, then came over and elbow bumped us and said thank you very much," she revealed. "Then he said if the kids would like they could go up in the helicopter."

Mission: Impossible 7 is expected to open in theaters on May 27, 2022.

Ryan Reynolds and Lil Rel Howery, on their onscreen friendship that was key to 'Free Guy'

Ryan Reynolds and Lil Rel Howery, on their onscreen friendship that was key to 'Free Guy'

20th Century Studios/Walt Disney Studios

In Free GuyRyan Reynolds plays Guy, and Lil Rel Howery plays his best buddy, named, well, Buddy -- two plain monikers that hint at their seemingly meaningless lives: they're actually just background characters in a video game.

However, that revelation only comes to Guy when he dons a pair of glasses that lets him see that he and Buddy's everyday lives -- as, respectively, a bank teller and a security guard -- are just cannon fodder for gamers in the real world.

That world-changing revelation doesn't change their friendship, however, which is cemented in a moving speech Buddy gives at the movie's climax.

"...[I]t's always weird when you do speeches like that, you're kind of like emotionally tied to it," Howery said with a laugh at a recent press event. "I remember shooting it with [director] Shawn [Levy] and them...and I had to take a walk. I wasn't like gonna tear up in front of y'all, but I was like, 'Wow, that's what that was.'"

He adds, "Buddy has a couple of those moments and which is what I loved about the character, is that, you know, his innocence came with how comfortable he was with his friendship...and that's what I loved about that."

Reynolds adds, "Rel and, I just immediately, from the moment we met, kind of clicked. I was a huge fan of his," Ryan says before adding self-deprecatingly, "and I think we can all say he was a huge fan of [co-star] Taika [Waititi]."

He continues, "So it was great to get out there and mess around and play and sort of form that bond and put it up on the big screen."

Free Guy is now in theaters from 20th Century Studios, which is owned by ABC News' parent company, Disney.

S-V-Ooh: 'Law & Order' vet Chris Meloni jokes about his derrière sparking a "cultural movement"

Men's Health/Ben Watts

Chris Meloni, star of Law & Order: Organized Crime, got a little cheeky when bringing up the internet's obsession with his backside.

Meloni, 60, became an online spectacle after on-set photos of his shapely bottom went viral in the spring.  Speaking Wednesday with Men's Health, the actor admitted he's likes his newfound sex symbol status and laughed, "How much am I allowed to taste of this fruit? How much am I allowed to enjoy this?"

He also reveled in the fact that he's on the magazine's cover, and confessed, "The aspect of age comes into play... and how I feel about it.  A friend of mine said, 'Did you ever think in a million years you’d be on the cover of Men’s Health?' I said, 'Certainly not at age 60.'"

Meloni also addressed why he walked away from Law & Order: SVU a decade ago, bluntly revealing it was over a salary dispute.

"[NBC] literally came to me on a Thursday night and said, 'This is the deal. We want the answer by tomorrow. It’s our way or no way," the Emmy nominee explained, adding that he refused to compromise and responded, "This is what I want. If you can’t do it, that’s fine. Let’s figure out my exit."

Meloni then explained why he returned to the franchise, saying showrunner Dick Wolf wanted him to come back "since the day he left."  The actor said he heard Wolf's pitch for Law & Order: Organized Crime -- a series about his character, Elliot Stabler -- and agreed to return to NBC.

He added that he is "not stressed" about the success of the series, which was renewed for a second season, saying his mentality this time around is "just ride. Just do, just be."

Check out Adam Driver, Lady Gaga and Jared Leto in the trailer for Ridley Scott's 'House of Gucci'

Check out Adam Driver, Lady Gaga and Jared Leto in the trailer for Ridley Scott's 'House of Gucci'

© 2021 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Academy Award-winning director Ridley Scott has unveiled the trailer for his much-anticipated new film, House of Gucci.

Adam Driver plays assassinated fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci, while an almost unrecognizable Jared Leto plays his cousin, Paulo, and Lady Gaga plays Maurizio's ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of arranging his murder. Maurizio was the grandson of the iconic label's founder, Guccio Gucci.

As Blondie's "Heart of Glass" floats in the background, Gaga says in an Italian accent, "It was a name that sounded so sweet... Synonymous with wealth, style, power. But that name was a curse, too."

The trailer shows Patricia and Maurizio's wedding, the trappings of the fabulous wealth that the House of Gucci accumulated and, ultimately, the family drama.

"You need to take out the trash," Gaga's Patrizia tells her husband.

"But they're my family," Driver's character protests.

"So am I," the ambitious Patrizia replies.

"You picked a real firecracker," Oscar-winner Leto's balding, bloated Paulo replies, rolling his R's in a way that would make any Italian language teacher proud.

As the trailer takes a dark turn, title cards flash on screen reading: "Money," "Family," "Power," "Betrayal," "Sex," "Loyalty," "Scandal," "Ambition" and, ultimately, "Murder."

After an assassin raises his pistol, the trailer cuts to Gaga's Patrizia in a stylish ski outfit, sipping an espresso by the slopes. "I don't consider myself an ethical person," she confesses. "But I am fair."

In the final scene, she makes the sign of the cross, saying "Father, Son, and House of Gucci."

House of Gucci also stars Salma Hayek, and Oscar winners Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons.  It hits theaters November 24.

Questlove says Ava DuVernay, Spike Lee and his "awesome team" were assets in making 'Summer of Soul'

Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson admits he was "in panic mode" when he decided to put out his directorial debut Summer of Soul, a documentary-film which chronicles the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.

"I called Ava [DuVernay] up a lot," Thompson reveals to ABC Audio. "Just to get names.. and know, "[Who] should I look for -- a writing director, cinematographer?' That sort of thing.'"

While the Roots drummer shares that he "called up" other directors like Ernest Dickerson and Spike Lee to get advice, he says he felt comfort in knowing that he "also had the right team."

"I.. was fully transparent with them," Questlove says. "Like, 'Look, this is my first time driving this thing. If there's anything you see that could put us in hot water or that you feel could be better, I'm wide open to it."

Thompson says those helping him along the way included his "awesome team of producers" and editor, who he says understood the importance of capturing the essence of the music-centered film.

"So even... the rhythm that we used for this film was important," Questlove notes. "We assembled the perfect team to help deliver this message to the people."

Summer of Soul is available in theaters and on Hulu.

Khloe Kardashian opens up about discussing race with daughter True

Khloe Kardashian opens up about discussing race with daughter True

Rodin Eckenroth/WireImage

Khloe Kardashian is opening up about how she plans to discuss race with her daughter, True

"I will be always learning and trying to do the best I can do as being her mom," Khloe said in Monday's episode of the Role Models podcast. "I’m obviously not a woman of color, but I do want her to be exposed to as much inclusion but variety as possible."

Kardashian shares her three-year-old daughter with her ex-boyfriend, NBA player Tristan Thompson, who is of Jamaican descent. The 37-year-old reality star added that she didn't want True "living in a bubble...because we do have this very privileged life, I want her to know all types of life and all types of living and be very aware of that."

"I know some people get uncomfortable with talking to their kids about race, or they think, 'Oh we live in a bubble, we never have to address that my child is Black.' I mean, of course you do," Kardashian went on. "You’re only setting them up, I think, for failure if you don’t talk about race and probably the things they’re going to endure once they’re in, quote, the real world."

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star added that the "beauty" of having sisters in the same situation is that they get to have some of those conversations together. Kim Kardashian has four mixed race children with Kanye West, and Kylie Jenner has a mixed race child with Travis Scott.

While Khloe admitted to not knowing exactly at what age she'll have the conversation with True, she concluded by saying she wants True to grow up in "a world surrounded by love but still very aware that she is a woman of color."

Aaron Sorkin and Paulina Porizkova call it quits

ABC

Aaron Sorkin and Paulina Porizkova have broken up, the 56-year-old model shared Tuesday on Instagram.

"I'm so grateful for his presence in my life. He helped heal me and reclaim myself," Porizkova wrote next to a photo of her and the writer/producer, with a broken heart emoji superimposed over it. "There truly may be no better man, no man who's more genuinely 'good.' He's brilliant and witty and funny and sexy. But it doesn't matter how much we may wish we were birds of a feather -- we're still a duck and a goose."

The announcement comes three months after the former couple confirmed their relationship on the 2021 Oscars red carpet.

Sorkin, 60, was previously married to Julia Bingham from 1996 to 2005, with whom he shares a 20-year-old daughter, Roxy.

Porizkova, tied the knot with The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek in 1989 before separating in 2017, two years prior to his death. They shared two children together, Jonathan, 27, and Oliver, 22.

As online commenters sour on her, Chrissy Teigen tells TMZ she could be cancelled "forever"

MEGA/GC Images

(NOTE LANGUAGE) Chrissy Teigen didn't get a warm reception from folks online when she emerged from her self-described "cancel club" in the wake of her cyberbullying scandal.

The former model and cookbook author hit the streets of LA in a conspicuous equestrian outfit on Tuesday, and the one-time "Mayor of Twitter" wasn't welcomed by commenters, to say the least.

Replies to a pic of her posted on the gossip site JustJared's Instagram feed were overwhelmingly negative. "Does this lady not realize that the entire world sees how desperate she is for attention? It’s so obvious. No one in LA walks around in riding gear," snarked one commenter, who got hundreds of likes.

"Is she still telling teen girls to kill themselves?" another wrote, referencing Teigen's cyberbullying of Courtney Stodden when the model was 16.

"Ride out of town," one said of her riding gear.

Meanwhile, Teigen herself spoke to TMZ videographers during that outing, vowing, "I have decided I'm not getting involved in anyone's s*** ever again."

She laughed when she was asked when she thinks she would be out of the "cancel club" she lamented being a member of, adding, "I don’t know, it could be forever. I have no idea. I don't know."

The comments come just days after Stodden herself laughed at a recent post from Teigen in which she lamented her plight. "Just be nice," Stodden wrote in response.

Directed by Peter Nicks and executive produced by Coogler, the Hulu Original doc will premiere on both Hulu and in select theaters on Thursday, August 12. The film follows an Oakland High School’s class of 2020 as they confront an "unprecedented year" due to anxiety over test scores, college applications, the pandemic, and their attempt to defund the school district’s police force. Homeroom is billed as Nicks’ final chapter in a trilogy of films which include 2012's The Waiting Room and 2017's The Force. The three docs examine the relationship between health care, criminal justice, and education in Oakland, CA over the past decade. All three films will be available to stream on Hulu on August 12.

In other news, the Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore-produced legal drama Reasonable Doubt has been scooped up by Hulu's Onyx Collection, Variety has learned. Watch Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Adam Driver go medieval in the trailer for 'The Last Duel'

Walt Disney Studios

Matt Damon reunites with his childhood pal and fellow Good Will Hunting Oscar winner Ben Affleck in the upcoming medieval drama The Last Duel

The pair starred in, produced, and co-wrote the 20th Century Studios' movie with Academy Award nominee Nicole Holofcener for legendary Oscar winning filmmaker Ridley Scott.

In the film, which is based on real events, Damon plays a respected warrior called Jean de Carrouges, who faces off against Adam Driver's Jacques Le Gris, who is accused of assaulting de Carrouges' wife.

"[S]he refuses to stay silent," the studio says of Emmy winner Jodie Comer's Marguerite. Her publicly accusing her attacker is, "an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy," and "the ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God's hands."

The film is based on Eric Jager's book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France

Scott, who previously worked with Damon on The Martian, called it an "added bonus" to work with him and Affleck as screenwriters. Scott predicted Comer's performance as Marguerite "will make her one of the great actresses of her generation."

The Last Duel will be released nationwide on October 15.

'Jackass' star Sean McInerney emotionally recalls shark attack

Jackass star Sean "Poopies" McInerney was attacked by a shark while filming a special for Discovery's "Shark Week," and now he's nursing both physical and emotional scars.

McInerney was attempting a wakeboard jump over shark-infested waters and came dangerously close to death, something he emotionally recalled in a graphic video posted to his YouTube channel.

"There was like 10 sharks around me and...I was trying to swim out and I couldn't," the daredevil tearfully recalled. "I knew I got bit and I was gonna get attacked by about six more sharks, and luckily I didn't. I just got my hand bitten."

"Scariest thing in my life," he adds, noting that he truly thought he was going to die.

Luckily, a nearby safety medic risked his own life and jumped on McInerney, pulling the surfer and TV star to safety.

The media personality says he's thankful he only suffered one bite, but admitted it was a "gnarly" hand injury.

According to JackassSteve-O, McInerney was immediately taken into surgery so medics could "reattach two completely severed arteries and all of his severed tendons."

Steve-O also assessed McInerney's injury in comparison to all the injuries collectively suffered by the entire Jackass crew over the years, and declared that his was "the gnarliest."

Zendaya reacts to criticism over Lola Bunny's less-sexualized design in new 'Space Jam' movie

Zendaya reacts to criticism over Lola Bunny's less-sexualized design in new 'Space Jam' movie

ABC

Zendaya was only a few months old when the first Space Jam movie, starring Michael Jordan, hit theaters in 1996.  That said, a lot has changed since the Looney Tunes dribbled across the court -- with fans seemingly being the most divided over Lola Bunny's sporty redesign in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Lola traded in the crop top she wore in the first film for a basketball jersey, with movie execs saying they didn't want to sexualize the cartoon character.  While the move was applauded by some fans, others were outraged.

Zendaya, who voices Lola in the new film, tells Entertainment Weekly that when she was first offered to play Lola, she "didn't know" people would be upset over the character's updated look.

"I didn't know it was going to be as much of a focus as it was," she laughed. "But I understand, because she's a lovable character. She's very important, so I get it."

Zendaya, 24, who said she grew up watching the original film because of her family's love of basketball, explained that Lola's character resonated with her because of what she stood for, and not because of what she looked like.

"I've always appreciated Lola because she's the only girl on the team, kind of holding it down for the ladies -- and she's also an incredible player," the Euphoria star expressed. "I think in this reimagining of who she is, it just leans into that a little bit more, the fact that she's got these skills and she's an MVP."

Space Jam: New Legacy -- also starring LeBron JamesDon Cheadle and, of course, the rest of the Looney Tunes squad -- hits theaters on Friday.

Zendaya spills on possibility of starring in fourth 'Spider-Man' movie

ABC/Lou Rocco

Ahead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's upcoming third Spider-Man movie, Zendaya is weighing in on the possibility of a fourth installment.

Speaking recently with E! News, the 24-year-old actress -- who stars as Spider-Man's, a.k.a. Peter Parker's, love interest, Michelle "MJ" Jones -- admitted she has no idea what's next.

Confirming that the third movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, recently wrapped filming, Zendaya expressed, "It was so much fun. It was just kind of bittersweet."

The upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy star added that neither she nor the cast "know if we’re going to do another one, like, is it just going to be three and done?"

"Normally you do three movies and that’s pretty much it," Zendaya explained. "I think we just were all absorbing and taking the time to just enjoy the moment being with each other and being so grateful for that experience."

Noting she did the first movie when she was 19, the actress continued, "It's pretty special to have grown up all together and be apart of another legacy."

"There's been so many different Spideys before us," Zendaya added, referencing the past Spider-Man incarnations played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. She feels "very, very lucky" to have been part of the latest Spider-Man franchise, which stars her rumored boyfriend Tom Holland as the webslinger.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters December 17.

Taking to Instagram on Monday to share a sunset photo of her lounging at the beach while in costume, the singer reflected on starring in her first breakout role.

"And just like that..that’s a wrap," Bailey remarked. "After auditioning for this film when i was 18 just about to turn 19, to now finishing filming through a pandemic when i turned 21 ..we have finally made it."

"I feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all of its glory..it has been the toughest experience being away from everything and everyone i’ve ever known, to feeling self doubt/ loneliness, but also feeling such freedom and perseverance as i’ve reached the end," the Chloe x Halle singer continued. "This experience has made me so much stronger than i ever thought i could be."

Bailey shouted-out her fellow cast and crew mates who worked on the movie, noting how proud she was to have worked alongside such professionals.

"I cannot wait for time to speed up so you all can watch this film because it was made with so much love (plus blood sweat and tears)," the Grammy-nominated singer expressed before further shouting-out the movie's filming location in Sardinia "for a wonderful ending."

While The Little Mermaid's release date has yet to be announced, the movie is slated to swim into theaters next year.

Besides Bailey, the movie will also star Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

'The Bachelorette' recap: A shocking and heartbreaking exit rocks the house

ABC/Craig Sjodin

The Bachelorette continued Monday with one suitor's shocking and heartbreaking exit, leaving the rest of the men doubting where they stand with Katie.

The episode started with a friendly competition for the remaining 12 men, cooked up by Katie and mentors Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe. The three wanted to find out who among the suitors -- to borrow a phrase from a classic Seinfeld episode -- was "the master of his own domain."

Dubbed "Operation: WOWO," the men made a promise to refrain from "self-care" for the remainder of the competition.

Back to the real business at hand, Justin got the first one-on-one date with Katie -- a dress rehearsal of sorts for their potential big day in which they had to write and recite their wedding vows.

Katie admitted the date was tough for her and tearfully explained that her dad, whom she'd lost to cancer, could not give her away.  She also revealed that she'd learned shortly before his death that he was not her biological father.  Despite her birth father's attempt to reach out, Katie said he could never replace the man who raised her.

Justin's promise to support Katie and be there for her "no matter what," along with his ability to listen to her, resonated with her.  Katie believed his caring nature would make him a great husband and awarded him the date rose.  Afterwards, they slow-danced to MAX performing his song, "Butterflies."

Next, Katie enlisted RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars winners Shea Couleé and Monét X Change in a group date that engaged BlakeAndrewMichael A.GregAaronMike P.BrendanJamesTre and Hunter in a "great royal debate" to prove why they deserved to remain in the competition with Katie, instead of the other suitors.

When pressed to pick the man they thought was the least compatible with Katie, Hunter was the unanimous choice, arousing Katie's suspicions.  Later, at the after-party, James, Tre and Aaron used their time with Katie to try and cast more doubt in her mind about Hunter's character, leaving the bachelorette confused and sick to her stomach -- literally.  She abruptly ended the date, informing the men that they would not be getting a rose.

Another one-on-one date, this time with Connor B., started out with a special double date featuring Bristowe and her fiancé, Jason Tartick.  Beforehand, Katie admitted that she and Connor are still in the "friend-zone" and hoped the date would change that.  After one last kiss between the two failed to ignite a "spark," Katie informed Connor he would be going home.

In a break with tradition, Connor personally told the remaining suitors he was leaving, leading to an emotional goodbye that left them all shell-shocked because the Tennessee-based math teacher was once considered the one to beat.  His departure caused everyone to doubt their own futures with Katie.

The tension grew more intense after Katie canceled the pre-rose ceremony cocktail party, revealing she'd already made up her mind.  Fed up with the drama, she sent James, Tre, Aaron and Hunter home.

The Bachelorette airs Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
