MUNCIE, IN—The Soup Kitchen of Muncie will host its second annual Farm to Table Dinner on Wednesday, October 7, at The Carriage House of Yorktown, bringing together local farmers, chefs, community partners and supporters for an evening celebrating food, community and the importance of making sure everyone has access to a good meal.
Dinner begins at 7 p.m.
Guests will enjoy a dinner and dessert featuring locally sourced ingredients from area farmers and producers, many of whom also regularly support the Soup Kitchen of Muncie. The menu will be prepared by two local chefs, Aaron Dodd, chef at Ball State University, and Christiana Mann, owner of The Culinary Cottage.
Drinks for the evening will be served by Roho’s Martini Bar, adding a local cocktail experience to the farm-to-table dinner. Each ticket also includes a drink ticket and a special chocolate gift created by The Queer Chocolatier.
Guests who choose the VIP experience will have an opportunity to learn about creating seasonal brews from the local Home Brew Club.
Dani Tippmann to serve as keynote speaker
The evening will also feature keynote speaker Dani Tippmann, a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and a recognized artist, cultural knowledge bearer and advocate for community food traditions. She will talk about Wild Foods of Indiana, including the wild river rice and the work of the Myaamia Heritage Foundation.
Tippmann serves as the Kiihkayonki Community Food Program Director for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, where her work focuses on community food, gardening, traditional plants and the use of plants for food, health and craft.
She has dedicated much of her life to learning, preserving and sharing Myaamia cultural knowledge connected to plants, foodways and the natural world. Her work offers a unique perspective on the connections among food, culture, community and the land.
“We are especially excited to have Dani join us this year,” said Dottie Kreps, president of the Soup Kitchen of Muncie Board of Directors. “Her understanding of food, plants, culture and community makes her a wonderful fit for Farm to Table.
More than a dinner
The Farm to Table Dinner is a fundraiser supporting the Soup Kitchen of Muncie’s ongoing work to provide meals to people throughout the community.
The Soup Kitchen currently provides a hot meal and sack lunch Monday through Friday, welcoming anyone who comes through its doors. Guests are treated with dignity and respect, without being required to prove their need or explain their circumstances.
The organization sees food as a basic need and works to make sure that anyone who comes to its door can receive a meal in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.
“Our guests are our neighbors,” Kreps said. “Sometimes a meal at the Soup Kitchen means one less thing someone has to worry about. It allows someone to focus on a job application, an interview, an appointment, paying a bill or taking care of their family. That is what dignity looks like.”
Funds raised through the Farm to Table Dinner will help the Soup Kitchen continue providing meals and strengthening its ability to respond to the needs of the community.
Table sponsorships are still available and include 4 tickets for the VIP experience. For more information about Table Sponsorships contact Dottie Kreps at info@soupkitchenofmuncie.org
