MUNCIE, IN—On April 11, in recognition of National Pets Day, the Riverside-Normal City Association took action to support Emerson Dog Park through a community-led mulch donation effort aimed at improving conditions for park users.
This initiative reflects the association’s commitment to caring for shared public spaces. While members express appreciation for the Muncie Parks Department and its ongoing work to maintain the city’s parks, they believe stewardship of public access areas should also be embraced as a community responsibility.
“Emerson Dog Park brings together a diverse group of people every day,” said a representative of the association. “It is a place where neighbors connect, and we want to ensure it remains safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.”
The donated mulch will help address wear and tear in high-traffic areas, reduce muddy conditions, and enhance the overall experience for visitors and their pets. The effort is designed to support the longevity of the park while easing some of the maintenance demands placed on city resources.
The Riverside-Normal City Neighborhood Association views this project as a model for how neighborhoods can work together to strengthen and sustain shared spaces.
“We are grateful for the work of the parks department and recognize the challenges of maintaining parks across the city,” the association shared. “At the same time, we believe public spaces like Emerson Dog Park benefit when the community takes an active role in their care.”
With a wide range of visitors who use the park regularly, the effort highlights the importance of unity and shared purpose.
“We do this for what we have in common,” the association added. “A love for this space and a commitment to our community.”
