When Ball State opens the football season on September 5, they’ll be playing the #1 team in the country. Ohio State, voted No. 1 overall in preseason balloting for the first time since 2015. The Buckeyes were picked first by 38 of the 72 coaches on the panel. But while Ohio State fans might appreciate the respect, it’s a historical fact the team voted No. 1 in the preseason rarely ends up winning the national championship. Notre Dame edges out defending national champion Indiana for the No. 5 position by a mere two poll points, though the Fighting Irish received just five first-place votes and the Hoosiers claimed 14 — the second-most among all teams.
Someone has cut down a flock camera at the intersection of Riverside Avenue and Dicks Street near Ball State’s campus. The Ball State Daily News says University Police are aware of the incident, and an investigation is under way.

Yesterday, 69 years in prison was the sentence for James Shelden (DOB 03/20/1980) by John M. Feick, Judge of the Delaware County Circuit Court No. 4. On April 30, 2026, a Delaware County jury deliberated for approximately 4 hours before convicting Shelden of Murder, a Felony, Obstruction of Justice, a Level 6 Felony, and Auto Theft, a Level 6 Felony. The trial began on April 27, 2026. After the sentencing hearing, Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman said “I am proud of Chief Deputy Prosecutor Zachary Craig and Deputy Prosecutor Maricel Driscoll, Prosecutor’s Office Investigators Heather Stanley and Kira Curtis, and Detectives Matt Kubiak and John Branson, the entire Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and Victim Advocate Andrea Johnson for their hard work and dedication in this case.” Hoffman further said that “In 2016, the Defendant brutally murdered Mark Trent and dumped his body off a cliff in Tennessee like a piece of garbage. By doing so, he thought he was off the hook and home free. He was wrong. The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office and the law enforcement community will always continue to investigate crime and relentlessly pursue justice. The mere passage of time does not mean that you will not be held accountable for your crimes. Although justice has been delayed by the Defendant’s heinous acts and attempts to conceal his crime – justice has not been denied.”
The Anderson Marching Highlanders will defend their State Fair Band Day championship tomorrow (Friday) in Indianapolis. Band director Richard Geisler tells “The Anderson Journal” repeating as state champs isn’t the only measure of victory.
Indianapolis native Dasiah Smith has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of armed robbery from a January incident in Muncie. The 25-year-old previously was convicted of armed robbery in 2018 and criminal confinement in 2019, both in Marion County.

Crisis averted. Elwood High School football now has 21 players practicing, enough to save the fall season. Low attendance this week had placed the 2026 season in peril. The Panthers open the season August 21 at Southern Wells. The home opener is September 11 against Madison-Grant and will be heard on Oldies 101.
By a 5-4 vote along party lines, the Muncie City Council was declined to adopt a proposed ban on city officials also serving on local boards and commissions. Also Monday, the council approved measures in support of replacing Muncie Fire Station 5, along Tillotson Avenue near the Ball State University campus, with a new station. Cost of the project has been estimated at up to $11.5 million. Mayor Ridenour said he had a letter from Ball State University committing $1.5 million to the fire station project.
Selma 46-year-old Amy L. Shaner has pleaded guilty to multiple child molesting charges. The Star Press says three of the charges carry maximum sentences of 40 years in prison. Shaner’s accuser, a child under 10 at the time, says he was abused more than 100 times.
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, which includes Anderson University, and the Ohio Athletic Conference have announced a Division III alliance. The leagues say they will collaborate on strategic initiatives, scheduling opportunities, affiliate membership agreements and more.
