Some weekend events were impacted by weather – the Muncie Summer Celebration canceled their parade, but many events did happen as planned at Heekin Park, with the basketball tourney moved indoors. The Fire Up Muncie event, after heavy rain in the morning, opened as planned and after 7 hours of the event, lightning and rain closed them up instead of the 10 p.m. plan.
In Indianapolis Saturday at the Gen Con Block Party on South Street, several vendors were forced to to close until Sunday. At the indoors venue: the Indiana Convention Center released a statement after attendees experienced a leaky roof. Organizers told WTHR: “The water leaks we experienced Saturday evening were the result of the extreme amount of rainfall in a short period of time damaging some of the original piping in our roof drainage system.”

Ohio 21-year-old Maricio Nathaniel Cruz has been accused of stealing a car outside a truck stop in Henry County and threatening the car owner at knife point. The Star Press says Cruz took the car last week from the Flying J Travel Center south of I-70 and State Road 3 and was later arrested in Rush County.
The Anderson Noon Exchange Club will celebrate its second Patriots Legacy Awards presentation on August 11, with retired judge Thomas Clem set to be named as this year’s winner. Clem founded the Veterans Court of Madison County.

Delaware County prosecutor Eric Hoffman has criticized a decision last week by Judge Doug Mawhorr to grant early release to convicted drug dealer Jessie Tyrone Vernon. Hoffman specifically disagreed with the decision to grant release on the basis of good behavior in prison. The 49-year-old Vernon was sentenced to 12 years for a 2024 meth conviction. His projected release was in 2031.
The Madison County Election Board has approved referendum questions concerning Anderson Community Schools, Elwood Community Schools and the town of Edgewood for November’s ballot. The Herald Bulletin says passage of the ACS referendum would keep the tax rate unchanged.

Frankton-Lapel Community Schools is putting an emphasis on mental health for its students and staff. They’ve partnered with a group out of Fort Wayne, and superintendent Sterling Boles tells “The Anderson Journal” the work started last spring.
New Castle 18-year-old Carter James Wooten has been charged with 13 felonies after investigators said they found inappropriate media on his cellphone involving children. The Star Press says the investigation began after Snapchat reported a video in June 2025 featuring a 6- to 8-year-old girl.
Former Pendleton Correctional Facility guard and Muncie native Shaunacy A. Edmonds has been sentenced to five months in prison after being convicted of battery against an inmate. The Star Press says a lawsuit by the inmate remains pending in U.S. District Court.

The Madison County Democratic Party has unanimously elected Becky Watkins as its next chairperson. The Herald Bulletin says Watkins replaces Tim Detrick, who resigned July 13. Watkins previously served as president of the Women’s Democrat Club.
