Parents looking to check off their back-to-school to-do list before classes begin will have a chance to take care of nearly everything in one stop today (Tuesday) at Southside Middle School (1601 E. 26th Street in Muncie). Meridian Health Services and Muncie Community Schools are partnering to host the Back-to-School Fit Fair from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Organizers say the event is designed to help families prepare for the upcoming school year with health services, school registration, free supplies, and community resources all available in one location. Families can receive a variety of free health screenings through Meridian Health Services, including checks related to ADHD, dental health, hearing, blood pressure, flexibility, and mental health. Students needing sports physicals can receive them for just $10 through Meridian’s School-Based Health Clinic. Low-cost immunizations will also be available through the Indiana Immunization Coalition, which will be accepting all insurance plans. Parents who still need to register their children for school will be able to complete that process on-site with representatives from Muncie Community Schools. One of the biggest attractions for families will be the backpack and school supply giveaway, with supplies available for the first 300 attendees. Free food and drinks will also be provided by A-Team Concessions while supplies last. In addition to health and educational services, families can connect with nearly 30 community organizations and vendors, including the YMCA of Muncie, Muncie Public Library, Second Harvest Food Bank, Minnetrista Museum & Gardens, Muncie Children’s Museum, Thrive Credit Union, United Healthcare, and many more. 104.1 will be broadcasting live from the event, featuring interviews with Meridian Health Services leaders, school officials, healthcare providers, community partners, and local families attending the fair. Organizers stress that the event is open to everyone and encourage parents to bring their children for an afternoon of resources, health services, and back-to-school preparation. The Back-to-School Fit Fair is presented by Ivy Tech Community College and supported by numerous local sponsors, including WLBC, Thrive Credit Union, LifeStream Services, United Healthcare, MDwise, Rural King, Minnetrista Museum & Gardens, and others. For families getting ready for the first day of school, Tuesday’s Fit Fair offers a convenient opportunity to take care of many back-to-school needs in a single visit.

Experts say Cyclospora is not considered readily contagious from person to person. That’s because the parasite needs one to two weeks in the environment after being passed in human stool before it becomes infectious, making direct transmission unlikely. Health officials are reminding the public about Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that causes the intestinal illness cyclosporiasis. The parasite is most often spread when people consume food or water contaminated with human waste, and recent U.S. investigations have focused on foodborne outbreaks linked to fresh produce. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. Symptoms can last for weeks and may improve, then return. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the recommended treatment is a specific prescribed antibiotic (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, often called TMP-SMX). People experiencing prolonged diarrhea or other symptoms should contact a healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment. For more information, health officials recommend following safe food-handling practices and staying alert for public health advisories related to Cyclospora outbreaks.
