MLB:
Cubs edged out Houston, 5-4. White Sox eked by Detroit in 10 innings, 5-4.
Reds were doubled up by Colorado, 10-5. With the loss and St. Louis beating Milwaukee, Cincinnati now has a six game lead in the NL Central. Tonight, the Reds will try to stop their two game losing streak as they battle the Rockies again in Denver. Pre-game coverage is on 1340 AM starting at 8:10. First pitch is at 8:40 p.m.
Indians:
Indianapolis lost their season finale yesterday to Louisville on the road, 6-3. The Indians finished the 2010 campaign with a record of 71-73. Indianapolis was third in the West division.
NASCAR:
Tony Stewart won the Emory Healthcare 500 Sunday night at Atlanta. Carl Edwards was second, Jimmie Johnson came in third, Jeff Burton finished fourth and Kyle Busch was fifth. With two races remaining before the Chase for the Cup begins, the Sprint Cup Series continues this Saturday with the Air Guard 400 at Richmond.
Indy Car:
Helio Castroneves won the Kentucky Indy 300 on Saturday night. Ed Carpenter came in second, Dan Wheldon was third, Tony Kanaan came in fourth and Dario Franchitti was fifth. The IZOD Indy Car Series resumes September 18th in Japan for the Indy Japan 300.
NHRA:
Avon resident Larry Dixon won the MAC Tools US Nationals yesterday at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Clermont. It’s the first time since 2005 that Dixon has won the Top Fuel event. In the funny car division, Ashley Force Hood took home her second straight title at ORP.
BSU:
The women’s volleyball team rolled to 6-0 with three victories at Worthen Arena over the weekend in the Active Ankle Challenge. The Cards downed Tennessee State, Robert Morris and Oakland in straight sets. Tonight, Ball State will try to start the 2010 campaign with a 7-0 mark as they host IUPUI at seven o’clock at Worthen Arena.
High School Football:
In week three action over the weekend, Muncie South dropped Yorktown, 28-7. Anderson clobbered Richmond, 32-7. Lincoln got by Tri, 13-6. Delta blanked Greenfield-Central, 6-0. Eastbrook hammered Frankton, 55-26. Elwood dumped Alexandria, 33-17. Jay County lost to Franklin County, 42-7. Winchester lost to Hagerstown, 42-10. Lapel fell to Indianapolis Ritter, 48-20. Wes-Del lost to Knightstown, 41-8. Muncie Central lost to Kokomo, 56-14. Madison-Grant topped Blackford, 14-6. Marion rolled by New Castle, 44-7. Pendleton Heights lost to New Palestine, 20-3. Northeastern blanked Monroe Central, 34-0. Oak Hill downed Mississenwa, 27-7. Shenandoah got by Centerville, 18-13.
Local:
Former Ball State quarterback Nate Davis was cut by the San Francisco 49ers, according to The Star Press. Coach Mike Singletary indicated that he was frustrated with Davis’ slow development and work ethic. The 49ers signed Troy Smith to a one year deal as the third string quarterback.
In volleyball action over the weekend, Muncie Burris topped Louisville Assumption, 3-1. New Castle was 2-2 in the Providence Invitational. Wes-Del was 2-0 in the Kay Saunders Classic.
